I wanted to clone Ubuntu Mate x86 v. 20.04 LTS from SD card to USB SSD attached as sda.

Unfortunately, the cloning process freezes after second rsync.

I've got the same issue here on ubuntu 22.04.1 on a Raspberry Pi 4.
I can let the clone running for 24h and it's still blocked with this message.

J've activated the verbose mode to check what was going one and it seems that the rsync is properly performed but then nothing more is happening.
