As per CPython behaviour, `b"".hex()` should return an empty str object (not an empty bytes object). Fixes issue #18807. Signed-off-by: Damien George <damien@micropython.org> |

py/asmrv32: Do not clobber index register on viper load/store.
This commit lets the native emitter preserve the value of the index register when performing register-indexed loads or stores for halfword or word values on RV32. The original code was optimised too aggressively to reduce the generated code's size, using compressed opcodes that alias the target register to one of the operands. In register-indexed load/store operations, the index register was assumed to be allocated somewhere safe, but it was not always the case. To solve this, now all halfword and word register-indexed operations will use REG_TEMP2 to store the scaled index register. The size penalty on generated code varies across operation sizes and enabled extensions: - byte operations stay the same size with or without Zba - halfword operations will be 2 bytes larger without Zba, and will stay the same size with Zba - word operations will be 4 bytes larger without Zba, and 2 bytes larger with Zba There is also a minor firmware footprint increase to hold the extra logic needed for conditional register clobbering, but it shouldn't be that large anyway. py/asmthumb: Do not clobber index register on viper load/store.
This commit lets the native emitter preserve the value of the index register when performing register-indexed loads or stores of halfword or word values on Thumb. The original code was optimised too aggressively for a register-starved architecture like Thumb, and the index value in the sequence to generate was assumed to be allocated somewhere safe. This is valid on other architectures, but not on Thumb. To solve this, load operations do clobber a temporary register that should be safe to use, REG_TEMP2, to store the scaled register offset. REG_TEMP2's value is only used within the scope of a single ASM API instruction. Save operations unfortunately use a register that is aliased to REG_TEMP2, since they need to have three values in registers to perform the operation. This means the index register needs to be pushed to the stack before performing the scale + store operation, and then popped from the stack. That's a 4 bytes penalty on each store and a minor speed hit on generated code (plus a minor footprint increase of the firmware image). Signed-off-by: Alessandro Gatti <a.gatti@frob.it> |

This commit migrates handling of certain narrow (ie. 16-bits) opcodes from a per-opcode dedicated code snippet to the existing table-driven opcode handler. The final ESP8266 firmware binary is 64 bytes shorter, without any change in the existing behaviour and with a reduced source code lines count too. Signed-off-by: Alessandro Gatti <a.gatti@frob.it> |

This commit introduces support for writing inline assembler code snippets when targeting Xtensa cores that use register windows (eg. the whole ESP32 family). Opcodes support is still limited to what the ESP8266 supports (as in, LX3 cores opcodes), however each LX core version is guaranteed to support all previous versions' opcodes as well. The ESP32 does not have the inline assembler enabled by default, following the existing expectations when it comes to firmware footprint. Since now emitted functions may have one of two possible exit sequences, the L32I test had to be fixed. It would return the word containing the L32I opcode itself, but the upper 8 bits of the word came from the following opcode - which can change depending on the exit code sequence. This is the only location in the code base that uses `mp_obj_tuple_del()`, so we can reduce code size by reworking the iter code not to use that function. The zip iter implementation should now have slightly better GC behaviour: it only allocates the return tuple if needed, instead of allocating it and then freeing it when the zip iterator is exhausted. py/stream: Use detailed error strings for TLS sockets.
Both mbedTLS and axTLS have support for producing more detailed error strings. However, these are not used if the error is raised in stream protocol functions (read/write/ioctl). This commit adds support for more detailed error messages from streams. Under the hood it's using a new MP_STREAM_RAISE_ERROR ioctl request to pass the error code back to the stream implementation which can raise a more detailed error. If the ioctl is not implemented, we fall back to the old behaviour and raise an OSError with the error code. Currently the detailed messages are only implemented for TLS sockets since those already had helper functions for raising detailed exceptions, but can be easily implemented in any other stream. py/emitinlinextensa: Refactor handling of selected opcodes.
This commit refactors handling of opcodes whose composition can be easily defined as an entry in a table, so there's only one bit of code handling those opcodes rather than several small bits with overlapping functionalities. Two opcodes, RER and WER have been added to that table for completeness, although they're gated behind the uncommon opcodes configuration define. Still, despite two new opcodes, the final binary is smaller by about 160 bytes. Signed-off-by: Alessandro Gatti <a.gatti@frob.it> |

This can be done now that it's declared in `py/objtuple.h`, where the `mp_obj_tuple` struct is defined. This allows much better code generation for users of `mp_obj_tuple_get()` where the caller uses len/items immediately (which is most uses), because the compiler no longer needs to allocate the return values on the stack. Changes code size by -36 bytes on bare-arm and -56 bytes on stm32. Signed-off-by: Damien George <damien@micropython.org> |

Prior to this fix, `mp_import_all()` assumed that its argument was exactly a native module instance. That would lead to a crash if something else was passed in, eg a user class via a custom `__import__` implementation or by writing to `sys.modules`. MicroPython already supports injecting non-module objects into the import machinery, so it makes sense to round out that implementation by supporting `from x import *` where `x` is a non-module object. py/lexer: Add support for nested f-strings within f-strings.
It turns out that it's relatively simple to support nested f-strings, which is what this commit implements. The way the MicroPython f-string parser works at the moment is: 1. it extracts the f-string arguments (things in curly braces) into a temporary buffer (a vstr) 2. once the f-string ends (reaches its closing quote) the lexer switches to tokenizing the temporary buffer 3. once the buffer is empty it switches back to the stream. The temporary buffer can easily hold f-strings itself (ie nested f-strings) and they can be re-parsed by the lexer using the same algorithm. The only thing stopping that from working is that the temporary buffer can't be reused for the nested f-string because it's currently being parsed. This commit fixes that by adding a second temporary buffer, which is the "injection" buffer. That allows arbitrary number of nestings with a simple modification to the original algorithm: 1. when an f-string is encountered the string is parsed and its arguments are extracted into `fstring_args` 2. when the f-string finishes, `fstring_args` is inserted into the current position in `inject_chrs` (which is the start of that buffer if no injection is ongoing) 3. `fstring_args` is now cleared and ready for any further f-strings (nested or not) 4. the lexer switches to `inject_chrs` if it's not already reading from it 5. if an f-string appeared inside the f-string then it is in `inject_chrs` and can be processed as before, extracting its arguments into `fstring_args`, which can then be inserted again into `inject_chrs` 6. once `inject_chrs` is exhausted (meaning that all levels of f-strings have been fully processed) the lexer switched back to tokenizing the stream. Amazingly, this scheme supports arbitrary numbers of nestings of f-strings using the same quote style. This adds some code size and a bit more memory usage for the lexer. In particular for a single (non-nested) f-string it now makes an extra copy of the `fstring_args` data, when copying it across to `inject_chrs`. Otherwise, memory use only goes up with the complexity of nested f-strings. Signed-off-by: Damien George <damien@micropython.org> |

py/lexer: Use null char as lexer EOF sentinel.
The null byte cannot exist in source code (per CPython), so use it to indicate the end of the input stream (instead of `(mp_uint_t)-1`). This allows the cache chars (chr0/1/2 and their saved versions) to be 8-bit bytes, making it clear that they are not `unichar` values. It also saves a bit of memory in the `mp_lexer_t` data structure. (And in a future commit allows the saved cache chars to be eliminated entirely by storing them in a vstr instead.) In order to keep code size down, the frequently used `chr0` is still of type `uint32_t`. Having it 32-bit means that machine instructions to load it are smaller (it adds about +80 bytes to Thumb code if `chr0` is changed to `uint8_t`). Also add tests for invalid bytes in the input stream to make sure there are no regressions in this regard. Signed-off-by: Damien George <damien@micropython.org> |

This commit lets "tools/mpy_ld.py" store architecture flags in generated
MPY files if explicitly requested, like "mpy-cross" does.
To achieve this, a new command-line option ("--arch-flags") was added to
receive the architecture flags value, accepting the same arguments'
format as "mpy-cross", and performing the same input validation.
The rest of the MPY toolchain was also modified to let the user pass the
arch flags to standard native module makefiles. Given that there's
already a well-established "ARCH" argument, "ARCH_FLAGS" was chosen to
pass the optional flags to "mpy_ld.py".
Finally, documentation was updated to mention the new variable.

This commit adds byte-swapping macros for 16-, 32-, and 64-bit values. Modern compilers are usually able to detect manual byte/endian swaps and will generate optimised code sequences if they know how to do that. However, in certain situations it may be helpful to let the compiler generate an optimised sequence if it doesn't recognise the pattern. Most compilers provide built-in byte swap operations for 16, 32, and 64 bit values, accessed via "__builtin_bswap<size>", but if those are not available a fallback implementation is provided. tools/mpy_ld.py: Add RV64 natmod support.
This commit adds the ability to compile native modules for the RV64 platform, using "rv64imc" as its architecture name (eg. "make ARCH=rv64imc" should build a RV64 natmod). The rest of 64-bits relocations needed to build a native module are now implemented, and all sample native modules build without errors or warnings. The same Picolibc caveats on RV32 also apply on RV64, thus the documentation was updated accordingly. RV64 native modules are also built as part of the CI process, but not yet executed as the QEMU port is not yet able to load and run them. Signed-off-by: Alessandro Gatti <a.gatti@frob.it> |

py/emitglue: Flush caches when loading native code without emitters.
This commit forces a data/instruction cache flush after loading native code blocks even if there's no emitter available. Caches flush upon native code load was still tied to the presence of a native emitter, but this assumption is no longer valid due to previous commits decoupling native code loading from code generation availability. py/persistentcode: Detect the target architecture from compiler defines.
This commit replaces the target architecture definition method, from relying on defines in MicroPython's configuration, to using the host compiler's environment definitions instead. Before these changes the target type was inferred from which kind of native emitter was enabled, since there can be only just one available at all times and it has to be the correct one otherwise generated code would crash the target. However, with the introduction of RV64 there is now a platform without an emitter, and thus RV64 targets would not be able to report their platform via "sys.implementation._mpy". The target is reported only if the interpreter is configured to load external MPY code. Now a series of compile definitions are used to detect the target platform the firmware image is compiled for, making the target definition more accurate and much harder to force the interpreter to report the wrong target architecture due to a misconfiguration. Whilst this is probably not directly affecting user-facing code, some infrastructure components like the testing framework and its associated feature scripts rely on this feature to properly execute test runs. This is also a concern for situations in which loading external binary code is needed but all code generation functions have to be disabled. Signed-off-by: Alessandro Gatti <a.gatti@frob.it> |

py/persistentcode: Decouple native code loading from emitters' presence.
This commit lets the interpreter load MPY files containing native code even if the target platform does not have a native emitter, or if native code generation is disabled. Native code loading has been tied to native code generation being enabled as a discriminant to allow said operation. This blocks native code loading on platforms that could benefit from such a thing but they don't (and probably won't) have a native code generation target written for them (ie. AArch64 and RISC-V 64). This also forces a firmware image to have a full native code compiler present even if it doesn't need to generate anything, as native modules already have all the code they will ever need to load. There is a new configuration setting, MICROPY_PERSISTENT_CODE_LOAD_NATIVE, that if enabled it will allow loading native code modules even if code generation (MICROPY_EMIT_<platform> and MICROPY_EMIT_INLINE_<platform>) is explicitly turned off. py/asmrv32: Use Zcmp opcodes for function prologues and epilogues.
This commit introduces the possibility of using Zcmp opcodes when generating function prologues and epilogues, reducing the generated code size. With the addition of selected Zcmp opcodes, each generated function can be up to 30 bytes shorter and having a faster prologue and epilogue. If Zcmp opcodes can be used then register saving is a matter of a simple CM.PUSH opcode rather than a series of C.SWSP opcodes. Conversely, register restoring is a single CM.POPRET opcode instead of a series of C.LWSP opcodes followed by a C.JR RA opcode. This should also lead to faster code given that there's only one opcode doing the registers saving rather than a series of them. For functions that allocate less than three locals then the generated code will allocate up to 12 bytes of unused stack space. Whilst this is a relatively rare occurrence for generated native and viper code, inline assembler blocks will probably incur into this penalty. Still, considering that at the moment the only targets that support Zcmp opcodes are relatively high-end MCUs (the RP2350 in RV32 mode and the ESP32P4), this is probably not much of an issue. py/asmrv32: Reserve a flag for the Zcmp RV32 CPU extension.
This commit performs the necessary changes to handle an additional RV32 CPU extension flag, for the Zcmp extension in this case. The changes are not limited to RV32-only code, as other parts of the tooling need to be modified for this: the testing framework has to be made aware that an extra bit can be set in sys.implementation._mpy and needs to know how it is called, and "mpy-cross" must be able to actually set that flag bit in the first place via the appropriate command line argument. py/emitnative: Optimise register clearing.
This commit introduces a new generic ASM API function to clear a register (i.e. clearing all the registers' bits). The native emitter used to perform a XOR operation to clear a given register, but different platform have more optimised method to achieve the same result taking up less space - either for the generated code or for the code generator itself. Arm, RV32, X86, and X64 already had an already optimised generator and generated optimised code. The code generator when build for Thumb takes less space generating a constant immediate move rather than a XOR operation, even though both operations would distill down to a single narrow opcode. On Xtensa the situation is almost the same as Thumb, with the exception that a constant immediate move would take one byte less than a XOR operation.
